Senior Advisor, Campaign Strategy -- AARP

Position: Senior Advisor, Campaign Strategy State and National Group We’re millions of members strong–with more joining us every day– the largest and “most powerful grassroots organization” around, according to Fortune magazine. In fact, our commitment and collective strength enables us to serve and support a broad and diverse membership as well as embrace our own workplace diversity. Here’s your chance to take action in Washington, DC and throughout the US! The State and National Group (SNG) is a key contributor to the One AARP mission of social change for Americans 50+ and their families. SNG drives social change through our advocacy work by giving our members a voice—at the federal, state and local levels—on issues important to them such as Financial Security, Health, and Home & Family. With a network of 53 offices in each state, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, we live where we work. This allows us to do what we do best…meet the people and directly engage in our communities to find out what they need and want, enabling us to educate our members with programs and information that is relevant to them. Responsibilities The campaign strategy team provides strategic counsel and political intelligence to support AARP’s advocacy efforts at the local, state, and national level. The Senior Advisor for Campaign Strategy will help design advocacy campaign strategies that amplify the voice of AARP’s members and the 50+. The position’s core responsibility is to foster an analytically-driven campaign environment through more sophisticated uses of individual-level data and targeting practices, commissioning and applying new statistical models, and implementing testing regimes for all our campaign work. However, the role is not a technical position or a data manager. The Senior Advisor will serve a strategic bridge between the grassroots program, state offices, and technical experts and be an “evangelizer” on the uses of data in advocacy. The Senior Advisor will work closely with the Director of Campaign Strategy to develop and implement a practice model to advise AARP’s state offices on effective data-driven advocacy strategies. In addition, the Senior Advisor will develop professional and social networks for political intelligence useful to AARP. • Make recommendations and provide strategic guidance on ways to make AARP advocacy programs more efficient and effective. • Identify and champion opportunities to conduct tests and experiments; assist in facilitating and executing experiments. • Establish and maintain best practices and standards for analytically-driven campaigns. • Prepare and present analyses, reports, and recommendations to support AARP advocacy campaigns. • Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications • 10+ years experience in national political campaigns or nonprofit advocacy • Strategic consulting experience and knowledge of change management strongly preferred • Deep understanding of identifying, engaging, and mobilizing specific constituency groups • Tactical familiarity with direct mail, live and automated phone programs, email marketing, and field organizing • A creative mind and excellent written and verbal communications skills • Sense of humor and diplomacy to shape organizational strategies through persuasion and personal influence To Apply Please send cover letter and resume to Joseph Liu at jliu@aarp.org with the subject line SENIOR ADVISOR, CAMPAIGN STRATEGY - [YOUR NAME]. Please include an explanation of your interest in AARP's mission and how you found out about this opportunity.
