Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Director will create and manage all aspects of a program that will enlist alumni and friends to be ambassadors for the University. These ambassadors will agree to communicate positive messages about the University of Maryland with their personal, professional and civic networks. The goal of the program is to grow the University’s brand and positive perception with the public at large, and also to provide a meaningful volunteer engagement opportunity for alumni. In addition, the Director will create and manage a legislative advocacy network for the Association and the University. The goal of the network is to help advance the legislative agenda of the University of Maryland, as well as to ensure that elected and appointed officials know the value of the University to the state, nation and world. The Director will identify alumni working in the state and federal legislatures, in federal and state agencies, and as political appointees. This individual will also work with the University community to recruit alumni to participate in the program. In addition, he/she will serve as the primary liaison with the University’s governmental relations staff to determine when to activate the advocacy network. Jointly with the Executive Director, the Director will create and staff the Association’s Advocacy Work Group (or Committee). The Director will work with staff in the President’s office, governmental relations, and marketing and communications. In addition, he/she will work with high level administrators at the campus’ colleges, schools, departments and units, and also with the Board of Governors and the Foundation Trustees. Minimum Qualifications: Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.): Bachelor’s degree required. Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in alumni or volunteer relations, including recruiting, managing and training volunteers. The successful candidate will have experience managing volunteer leadership boards and committees. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to assess, recommend and implement programming and operations based on strategic planning goals. Ability to think creatively and strategically in order to launch a new initiative. Ability to work collaboratively, multi-task, think strategically to both set and achieve goals. Background and experience in planning events. Ensure that federal energy policy-related legislative and regulatory activity is properly monitored and analyzed and that external advocacy responses are properly managed in support of company federal energy policy goals. Ensure internal customer needs are satisfied for (1) timely and reliable information related to federal energy policy-related legislative and regulatory developments important to the company; and (2) support of Berkshire Hathaway Energy and subsidiary-specific developments to FERC, DOE, NERC and Congress.
