Legislative Aide -- Dickstein Shapiro LLP
Dickstein Shapiro LLP, a large, DC-based law firm, is currently looking for a Legislative Aide to work in our Washington, DC office. This individual performs specifically delegated substantive legal and legislative tasks and other support functions under the direction and supervision of an attorney and/or lobbyist.
Primary responsibilities include: maintaining some or all aspects of the firm’s Political Action Committee (PAC); preparing firm filings including reports to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and Congress under the supervision of attorneys/lobbyists; assisting attorneys/lobbyists with advice and filings to FEC, DOJ, and Congress on behalf of various firm clients; organizing fundraising events for the firm’s PAC and client PACs; providing legislative tracking and research on client issues; attending hearings and press conferences; monitoring various articles and sites for information important to the Government Affairs group and their clients; performing basic legislative monitoring activities, including House and Senate Committee and floor procedures, press conferences, and other public events, and providing thorough and timely reports on such activities; and generally supporting the attorneys/lobbyists in the group.
Candidates must have: a Bachelor’s degree; up to two years of administrative experience on Capitol Hill or other legislative or campaign experience; strong organizational skills; strong written and verbal communication skills; a strong interest in the political process; the desire and willingness to be proactive; impeccable attention to detail; strong computer skills, including advanced functions of Microsoft Excel; and the ability to juggle multiple assignments. This position may require more than 37.5 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

The House Committee on Ethics seeks an experienced person to serve in a shared position as Counsel to the Chairman, with duties in the Chairman’s personal office as well. The Chairman-designate for the 113th Congress is Representative K. Michael Conaway. The Counsel to the Chairman serves as the liaison between the Chairman and the non-partisan staff director of the Committee, advises the Chairman on recommendations from the Committee staff, reviews documents for the Chairman’s signature and provides other services related to the Committee or the personal office as the Chairman may require. The vast majority of the Counsel’s time is likely to be focused on Committee work.
The Committee's responsibilities include conducting investigations and adjudicatory and disciplinary proceedings regarding Members and staff of the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as maintaining an active program that provides advice, education and training on the ethics rules to Members and staff. The Committee is bipartisan (evenly divided) and requires bipartisan agreement to move Committee matters forward. Most of the work of the Committee is conducted by authorization of the Chairman and Ranking Member together.
This position calls for strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work with staff and Members across the aisle. The counsel is required by Committee rules to conduct their duties in a non-partisan manner, and to observe the strict confidentiality rules of the Committee. Experience in congressional ethics or related fields is helpful, but not required.

UNPAID INTERNSHIPS: Conservative Republican Congressman seeks interns; staggered start dates, positions available immediately. Start/stop dates are very flexible. Positions may involve constituent care and contact, press assignments, research/legislative assignments, giving tours of the Capitol, and assisting staff in a million incidental and unforeseeable ways. We try to match our needs to the Intern's interests and aptitudes. Appointees will gain valuable experience in House functions and learn first-hand how the hippest and most dynamic office on The Hill operates. Conservatives with solid pro-life beliefs and strong work ethic will be a good fit.
