**********************
The Heartland Institute, a free-market think tank based in Chicago with offices in Florida and Washington, DC, is looking to hire a director to start up and run the Texas office of its Center on Risk, Regulation, and Markets. The director will be responsible for writing, research, building coalitions, and outreach related to Heartland’s free-market agenda for property and casualty insurance reform and other issues in the State of Texas.
All candidates should have at least a two years of experience working in and around the Texas legislature and some knowledge of insurance and windstorm legislation, Texas insurance markets, and related topics. Candidates should have at least one reference from a sitting member of the Texas legislature. A bachelor’s degree, roots in Texas, and work on environmental protection issues are all significant plus factors. The best candidates will have lots of energy, a record of published writing, a good sense of humor, ability to learn new things quickly, and an extreme aversion to nanny-state central planning.
Heartland is a free-market organization and candidates wishing to apply should review its Web site (http://www.heartland.org/) to learn more. The work Heartland has done on insurance in Florida is similar to the type of work we hope to do in Texas. While all candidates should have a commitment to free markets and human freedom, we don’t have an ideological litmus test. Our work on insurance involves coalition work with a variety of groups—particularly environmental groups—that do not always see eye to eye with free-market groups. We welcome Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and anyone else to apply for this position. There’s no need that candidates agree with every position everyone at Heartland has ever taken.
It goes without saying but we won’t discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, taste in music, affection for bad action movies, or anything else that’s illegal, immoral, or stupid for us to use as a basis for hiring. (One exception: If you listen only to accordion polka music all day, every day, you’re probably really, really annoying and won’t get hired for that reason.)
To apply, candidates should submit a writing sample, a resume, a brief cover letter, and a list of three (total) books, films, works of art, or other things they have found particularly influential in their lives. Candidates are free to also submit anything else they think will help us learn more about them and their backgrounds. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Labor Department recommends job-hunting Web sites picked in online contest
Sunday, February 21, 2010, Washington Post Jobs Section, Vickie Elmer
http://www.washingtonpost.com/
Sick of the same three job-hunting Web sites? Check out a new suite of niche career sites, career planning tools and social media jobseeker sites compiled in an online competition run by the U.S. Department of Labor.
It recommends about 60 sites, from the obscure to Monster, at http://www.careeronestop.org/jobseekertools.
After online votes last month by 16,000 employers, techies, unemployed people and others, the U.S. Department of Labor posted the favored tools on its CareerOneStop site.
"These are extraordinary times, and we need to get the tools to people" eager to work, said Jane Oates, assistant secretary for the department's Employment and Training Administration. The idea came from a White House meeting last summer on open government and technology, in which Oates recalled saying, "I wish I could improve the job-seeking tools available."
Among the crowd-sourced winners are AfterCollege, CareerStallion, GreatJob and LinkedIn. There are also links on résumé writing tips, online class resources and sites for older workers, ex-military personnel, and sales or human resources executives.
Since the results were posted this month, Oates said, she has heard from job seekers who have snagged interviews after using the sites chosen.
