There will be some outside U.S. support in this role in support of SC Johnson’s global business. This position reports to the Head of Global Government Relations. THE ROLE Based in Washington DC, the Senior Director of Federal Government Relations will be responsible for leading and managing SC Johnson’s government affairs program at the federal level. The successful candidate will work with the Head of Global Government Relations on programs to achieve favorable outcomes to federal policy proposals, and will work to optimize the company’s profile and visibility with federal policy-makers and agencies. This role will additionally support select government relations efforts in SC Johnson’s global market, such as the European Union. The successful candidate will help strategically position SC Johnson as a leading and progressive voice in the legislative and regulatory dialogue regarding relevant public policy matters. He/She will identify and address emerging public policy and business issues that could affect SC Johnson’s business as a diversified and complex global company. Working closely with business leaders, the successful candidate will assess potential impacts of public policy issues and develop and implement strategic plans to protect and advance the business interests of the company. This individual will ensure that business leaders understand the evolving government and public policy landscape and are proactively involved in any matters that could potentially affect the company. He/She will oversee day-to-day operations of the Washington DC office, will be the principal company advisor on federal policy matters, and will take a leadership role in SC Johnson’s visible presence in Washington, including attendance at fundraisers, social functions, and political events. He/She will additionally advise the Head of Global Government Relations on the best ways to involve company officers and executives on interactions with federal officials, agencies, and programs. As such, the role will have responsibility for cultivating and maintaining effective relationships on behalf of the company with key policy-makers, agencies and thought-leaders to keep the company at the forefront of U.S. and global policy development in Washington DC. The successful candidate will necessarily work closely with business teams, senior business management, with various departments (e.g. Law, RD&E, Human Resources, Product Supply, Global Corporate Affairs, Communication & Sustainability) on a wide range of projects and initiatives. The individual will also ensure that SC Johnson is effectively leveraging involvement in critical trade associations and with relevant industry groups and coalitions. He/She will additionally manage outside consultants (e.g. lobbyists) to represent SC Johnson’s business interests. Candidate Profile For this important role, we are seeking a skilled government relations executive. He/She must have highly effective strategic thinking and tactical implementation skills with a history of delivering desired results. The ideal successful candidate will be an expert in the areas of federal government affairs and public policy. The candidate should have 15+ years of relevant experience and have a firm understanding of the Washington DC political environment. A college degree is required and a masters degree is preferred. Some international experience is required, including direct issues management and knowledge of global business markets in relation to U.S. political influence. He/She will be a creative, flexible thinker and have extensive experience in settings where diverse, multi-site, multi-national corporate interests need to be represented effectively. The successful candidate will be skilled at working with business leaders to determine how government affairs and public policy advocacy can promote business objectives. He/She will possess established, bi-partisan relationships with key policymakers and regulators. The ideal candidate will have a track record of successfully leveraging participation in coalitions and trade associations.
