Description

The Director of Federal Government Relations will help shape and implement Mayo Clinic's proactive federal government relations strategy within the framework of the priorities of Mayo Clinic's strategic plan. Anticipate and guide Mayo Clinic's response to federal legislation and regulatory issues. Advise and counsel Mayo leadership on potential effects and work collaboratively with colleagues in the Mayo Clinic Department of Public Affairs, including directors of state government relations activities and the Mayo Clinic Health Policy Center, to develop and implement the organization's response. Assist in development of public policy positions and proactively communicate with policy makers in Congress, executive branch, government agencies and other organizations active in the federal health care public policy arena. Be an effective advocate for Mayo's position and actively participate in the health care policy arena. Based in Washington, D.C., but will spend time at and interact on a regular basis with staff at all Mayo Clinic locations.

Department: Public Affairs

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required in political science, government relations or a related field. Minimum of eight years experience Washington D.C-based, federal government relations is required. Knowledge of the political and legislative processes, along with established relationships in health care are a plus.

Other Qualifications:

Master's or Juris Doctor degree preferred. Congressional committee or comparable work experience preferred. The successful candidate will resonate strongly with Mayo's patient-centered values; possess excellent oral and written communication skills; and have the ability to understand and inform/counsel others about complex policy proposals/regulations. Candidates should demonstrate effective advocacy skills; strong interpersonal skills; the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with Mayo Clinic leadership and staff, elected officials and staff, bureaucrats and leaders within organizations actively engaged in the health care public policy arena.
