Policy Associate

The Alliance of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Science Societies (ACSESS) is seeking candidates for a new associate level position within the Washington, D.C. Science Policy Office (SPO). The Policy Associate (Associate) will support and lead efforts to increase federal legislative and funding opportunities related to agronomic, crop and soil sciences. Key responsibilities include: managing the development of all position statements; developing resources to support the SPO’s annual appropriations strategy; conducting research and preparing background documents for advocacy campaigns; organizing and assisting with the SPO’s Congressional Hill Days; assisting in development and operation of SPO advocacy campaigns, including direct and grassroots advocacy activities; organizing science policy annual meeting activities; participating and when appropriate taking a leadership role in managing coalitions and stakeholder events/meetings, and meetings with Congress and the Administration; leading all rulemaking activities and opportunities to nominate member scientists to serve on federal advisory boards/committees/councils; managing all SPO communications and interactions with the press; developing content for and managing and updating the SPO webpage; and managing Science Policy Interns.

The ideal candidate will have Hill and/or federal agency work experience. Experience developing and managing both authorizing and appropriations bills a plus. The candidate should be familiar with and understand the science programs supported by the Department of Energy Office of Science, National Science Foundation, NASA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, EPA, US Geological Survey, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and Agricultural Research Service, as well as the White House Offices of Science and Technology Policy and Management and Budget. Familiarity with science policy and the scientific community a must. Candidates should be detail oriented, organized, a self-starter, able to adapt to frequent change and prioritize effectively under constant deadline pressure; have excellent written and oral communications skills; and be confident speaking publicly and be able to work with diverse audiences. Understanding of Microsoft products, and clear and concise writing skills, a must. Salary commensurate with experience, plus comprehensive benefits package. ACSESS is an EOE.
