Job Description

We are currently interviewing for a Director of Government Affairs based in the N. VA/MD area. Government Affairs works to ensure that boating remains an affordable, available recreation for our Members and the nation’s boaters by reducing “hassle factors” and assuring future regulations and government policies are boating-friendly.

This position requires an active boater who is enthusiastic about organizing and conducting advocacy efforts, maximizing relationships with BoatU.S. Members (present and future), as well as outside organizations, to affect federal and state legislative and regulatory agencies, processes, and decisions.

Position Responsibilities:
Work to ensure legislative and regulatory changes are boater friendly. Focus, design, and deliver advocacy campaigns - become fully informed, evaluate and prioritize the Issues, develop and implement policy positions, strategy and tactics, and advocate company positions with regard to federal or state legislation regulations, or public policy with regard to the Issues, all in conjunction with the President of the Association and other senior staff.
Foster existing and create new relationships with an array of other groups, agencies, and legislative liaisons.
Represent BoatU.S. in public forums - networking and other meetings (boater groups, lobby groups; advocacy groups, presentations, etc.), press and congressional offices.
Learn and maintain understanding of a wide array of evolving topics.
Work independently as well as with internal & external teams.
Must constantly multi-task and have ability to prioritize and handle unpredicted work.
Desired Skills & Experience

Required Experience:
Active boater
Bachelor’s Degree
10+ years experience displaying increasing leadership responsibilities
Strong analytical and decision-making skills
Range of successful writing abilities (public comments, emails to boaters and Members, magazine articles, etc)
Excellent oral communications skills and decision making in public forums
Polished and professional appearance & demeanor
Experience supervising others
Adept at Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PPT, Outlook)
Ability to Travel (10%)
Grassroots activism or lobbying experience

Preferred Experience:
Association or non-profit organization experience

Additional Details:
Full time, Exempt position
Extra hours often needed
