Job Description
As The Nature Conservancy implements its new Global Challenges Global Solutions framework, it is seeking to leverage lessons and experiences from TNC’s field programs to mainstream nature-based solutions within ternational institutions, government agencies and corporations. The Global Environment Facility is a critical partner organization for TNC in this regard. The Nature Conservancy has an ongoing and strong relationship with the GEF and its Agencies, being a collaborator of numerous GEF funded projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia Pacific, and Africa.
The Senior Policy Advisor will therefore serve as the lead staff person covering GEF global policy issues, and will be in charge of keeping a strong and thriving partnership with the GEF. As such, this positionis aimed at bringing about and supporting policy change, projects and initiatives in a number of key countries to maximize the impacts and benefit of TNC’s investments in partnering with the GEF. The Senior Policy Advisor will work with TNC staff worldwide, coordinating closely with other colleagues in the International Government Relations Department and various TNC country offices and regional programs. The incumbent will lead development of strategies to mobilize GEF funding and co-financing in countries where TNC works.
In addition, the Senior Policy Advisor will support TNC regional programs and country offices by coordinating the preparation of specific project proposals for bilateral and multilateral public funding agencies such as the GEF and USAID. This assistance to TNC regional and country programs will be provided on a case by case basis based on workload and other consideration. The Senior Policy advisor will also support TNC regional and country programs with human resources and technical capacity building in selected TNC country programs to implement bi- and multilateral funding and co-financing strategies.
The Senior Policy Advisor reports to the Senior Policy Advisor – Foreign Assistance within the International Government Relations Department. The Senior Policy Advisor is based at TNC’s Worldwide Office in Arlington, Virginia.
Desired Skills & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in political science, public policy, government relations or related field and 6-8 years of senior relevant experience, including:
• Partnership and advocacy experience with international public funding agencies, including the Global Environment Facility.
• Experience in project proposal design and development for foreign aid projects. USAID and GEF experience preferred.
• Experience developing, directing and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
• Experience preparing and presenting project proposals to and/or negotiating with international organizations and federal government representatives.
• Ability to work with partners/government agencies without violating any restrictions related toconflicts of interest, lobbying former employers, or influencing decision makers.
