POSITION TITLE: Associate Director


GENERAL SUMMARY: Supporting the Medical Director, oversees the work of the Office of Government Relations in legislative, regulatory and advocacy arenas in order to carry out the mission and Strategic Plan of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Provides day-to-day administrative and management support to the Medical Director including supervision of department managers and their unit staff.

TRAVEL: 20 – 25%, 50 to 75 days per year including the Academy’s Annual Meeting,

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Strong health policy background which may include a graduate degree
in political science, health policy or a related area; 10 years of related experience; experience supervising employees, managing budgets, interacting with a Board of Directors, and working for a non-profit
organization; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and proven success managing teams of professionals. Desired: 5+ years of experience working in a Congressional office or regulatory agency; 5 years of association experience in a D.C. environment.

POSITION TITLE: SENIOR MANAGER REGULATORY AND SPECIALTY SOCIETY AFFAIRS

GENERAL SUMMARY: Monitor and develop positions in the Federal legislative and regulatory arena for the individual orthopaedic specialty societies that comprise the BOS. Develop a network of contacts and ongoing relationships with Federal agencies. Supervise and oversee the Musculoskeletal Research Funding unit in the DC and Rosemont offices. Make recommendations to BOS committees and Board of Directors of individual societies. Oversee the communications activities of the Office of Government Relations.

TRAVEL: Approximately 55+ days/year, includes the Academy's Annual Meeting.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Bachelor’s degree; Minimum of 5 years' related experience - Congressional staff, administrative, regulatory agency, or association; above average ability in oral and written communication; strong organizational and human relations skills; strong Microsoft office and typing skills; exercises considerable independence and judgment in handling responsibilities Desired: Advanced degree or graduate level courses in law, health care, or other related field; experience in reporting to a senior association executive or to a member of a company’s Executive Department.
