AH&LA seeks an energetic and proactive individual to handle the media relations and public outreach strategy on legislative and regulatory issues for the government affairs department of AH&LA. The Director also serves as the department’s publicist. The Director of Legislative Communications reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Policy. Specific responsibilities include:

Representing AH&LA’s positions and policies to other associations, legislative representatives, regulatory agencies, the media, and the general public; Developing and maintaining contacts with key congressional staff, Capitol Hill press, and national and regional news outlets; Nurturing working relationships with press secretaries and appropriate federal regulatory personnel; Developing and implementing effective media strategies to publicize legislative priorities; Coordinating public relations for the department, including arranging interviews and identifying opportunities for senior staff and industry representatives to communicate with the media; Writing press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and updating governmental affairs website; Creating and maintaining monthly Issue Briefs and Advisories; Writing monthly article for Lodging magazine in coordination with Government Affairs department; Acting as association representative and spokesperson at partner state association and travel/tourism conventions; Assisting department with power point presentations and special projects; Providing editorial assistance to governmental affairs department.

The Director of Legislative Communications must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; a college degree; a positive and proactive attitude and be a team player; Capitol Hill, campaign, or association experience; flexible hours and ability to travel and strong political instincts.
