Description:
The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) is looking to hire a Director of Federal Relations with a strong background in federal tax issues. As a member of the Government Relations department, the Director of Federal Relations serves as advisor to the Vice President-Federal Government Relations on legislative and regulatory issues affecting NAIFA, with an emphasis on federal tax issues.
Duties & Responsibilities: · Represent NAIFA before Congress and regulatory agencies on federal insurance and financial services issues. · Monitor and manage legislative and regulatory issues, primarily focusing on tax issues, but also assisting other lobbyists on additional issues as circumstances require, including insurance, pension, health, financial services, ERISA, and securities issues. Recommend positions to VP, Federal Government Relations. · Lobby and build relationships with members of Congress, regulatory agencies, and their staffs. Educate relevant legislative and regulatory officials and staff about issues of interest in NAIFA. This includes, when appropriate, individual lobbying and lobbying in conjunction with grassroots/constituents. · Recommend strategies and policies for legislative and regulatory issues. · Prepare memoranda, talking points, speeches, correspondence, policy recommendations, legislative strategies, presentations and other materials. · Share information on developing issues with colleagues and relevant NAIFA members. · Attend hearings, political events, fundraisers, and other meetings as necessary. · Represent NAIFA at association, industry, and coalition meetings. · Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the responsibilities associated in serving as advisor to VP, Federal Government Relations. · Work with relevant NAIFA committees and NAIFA allies (e.g., ACLI, AALU, and other groups that share common purpose with NAIFA). · Work with PIC and PAC personnel to coordinate the lobbying, PAC, and grassroots programs of the association. · Work well with association members and other employees, functions as a team player, and accepts constructive suggestions for improving job performance from supervisors and managers. · Maintain regular consistent attendance, accept supervision, and cooperate with coworkers. · Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: · 3-5 years of experience in legislative/government affairs. JD or other applicable advanced degree preferred. · Tax and ERISA experience as a Hill staffer or lobbyist strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: · Adept at building coalitions and consensus among membership. · Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills. · Excellent oral and written communication skills. · Some travel required. Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.
