The position of Vice President/Director is one which enhances and protects HSBC-North America ("HSBC's" ) image and reputation with key stakeholder groups by working with financial/business, trade and general media, and serving as corporate spokesperson as appropriate on a wide range of topics and issues. This position supports key HSBC-North America business priorities and related projects, and will work closely with business partners and corporate functions on these activities. Determine and manage the strategic direction for identified media and public affairs activities, including media relations and reputation/issues management. Part of the leadership team that identifies and manages issues to protect HSBC - North America from reputational risk or damage; help lead efforts in crisis communications when such matters arise. Develop and implement projects designed to enhance HSBC's reputation and thought leadership. Identify, develop and counsel senior management and other business leadership on pro-active opportunities to create and maintain a positive brand image and increase awareness of priority business activities, implementing approved recommendations.
Provide professional consultative and communications-related support to US and senior management and business units communicating key company developments and issues externally. Develop communications plans in conjunction with business teams as appropriate. Ensure consistent messaging of external communications within HSBC and to external constituents. As necessary, create presentation materials, talking points and key messages, and work with senior management on media interviews and speaking opportunities. Develop, write and edit press materials and corporate communications. Partner with other Public Affairs colleagues to ensure consistency of message delivery.
Manage media inquiries, including communication of HSBC position and messaging during media interviews; assist in developing strategy for issues/crisis management. Monitor media placements and ensure media program effectiveness. Proactively identify key internal business developments for publicity opportunities. Remain abreast of key industry and competitor business and public relations developments. Manage relationships with outside agencies and other resources as appropriate - including budget management, results reporting and strategy/message development. Ensure Public Affairs internal controls include processes for management of operational risk, in accordance with HSBC and regulatory standards.This position will also interact regularly with Legal, Compliance and Internal Communications functions to ensure all proper communications reviews have been accomplished in order to communicate messaging externally.
The position requires an ability to operate as part of a national and global team. Sound judgment, independent assessment, review, identification and determination of opportunities, and translation to brand or business building are keys to success. The role requires seamless execution of external communications management and delivery of such is key to corporate reputation management and is linked to and impacts business success for HSBC. The VP/Director Public Affairs will report into the head of Public Affairs for HSBC - North-America in Mettawa,IL (a Chicago suburb) but also have accountability to select corporate leadership.
# Bachelor's degree in finance, communications, journalism, business or related field # Minimum of ten years management experience in financial services, or large corporate public relations function # Understanding of investor relations or financial control management is a plus # Strong writing, interpersonal, communications, and media relations skills # Understanding of the financial services industry and financial markets, as well as the business, community and media environment in which the company operates
