Description: The Institute for the Study of War is recruiting for an intern to assist Senior Fellow Michael Gordon on research for his next book. Mr. Gordon is the chief military correspondent for The New York Times, where he has worked since 1985. At ISW, Mr. Gordon is writing a political and military history of the conflict in Iraq from 2004 to the present. Mr. Gordon is the co-author of two previous books: “Cobra II,” which chronicled the 2003 invasion and initial occupation of Iraq, and “The Generals’ War,” which focused on the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Interns are expected to conduct archival research and assist with other forms of research and documentation.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a graduate student or an undergraduate with coursework in a field of study related to international relations. Knowledge of the Iraq conflict or a Master’s degree in a related field is a plus. Candidates should have strong writing skills, the ability to conduct research independently, and should be able to carry out tasks in a timely and efficient manner. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus but not essential. Interns report directly to Mr. Gordon.

This position is available immediately, to begin in February 2011. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to internships@understandingwar.org.

Looking for the perfect way to launch your career in public service? You should think about PolitiCorps. You're getting this email because you expressed interest in the program, or because someone out there nominated you.

PolitiCorps (a program of the Oregon Bus Project) is an intensive, hands-on, ten-week political organizing bootcamp in Portland, Oregon. Our 2011 program runs from June 13 to August 20, 2011.

What is PolitiCorps?

Each summer, The Bus Project brings together 24 young people to gain the skills to lead our generation. It’s ten weeks of high-level trainings and workshops (learning practical skills and problem solving around progressive issues and values), planning and executing a field campaign of your own design, organizing action events, engaging volunteers, and building a strong network in state-level politics. When you finish the program, you'll have experience (and stamina) that will make everybody jealous. After graduation, PolitiCorps consistently connects its alumni with careers in the public interest.

Who are PolitiCorps fellows?

PolitiCorps Fellows are college seniors or recent graduates (ages 20-24, alternative educational backgrounds welcomed) who have demonstrated dedication to big-tent progressive values and a deep interest in the political process. PolitiCorps focuses on training young leaders who are ready to commit themselves full time to the hard, vital work of public service.

Fellows come from every state in the nation and from a diverse range of experiences and cultural backgrounds. Extensive campaign experience is not a prerequisite for PolitiCorps—but an understanding of campaign lifestyle does help Fellows make the most of the Summer bootcamp experience.
