Launched in 2011, Firedoglake (FDL) Writer’s Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit devoted to supporting the groundbreaking work of talented and innovative authors whose clarity of thought and inspiration we desperately need right now.

The Foundation’s work began in 2006 with an informal bi-weekly book salon series for authors to engage directly with their readers. As demand surged, the Foundation soon started hosting up to four salons each week. Today, FDL Book Salon is one of the first stops on the release schedule of influential political books. The Salon has hosted well-known authors such as Bob Woodward, Naomi Klein, Keith Olbermann, Matt Taibbi, and Bill McKibben as well as homegrown blogospheric talents like Yves Smith, David Neiwert, David Swanson, Gregg Mitchell, Ryan Grim and Ari Berman.

In 2010, the FDL Book Salon became its own 501(c)(3) and is now part of the Firedoglake Writer’s Foundation. In addition to serving as home of the Book Salon, the Foundation also offers fellowships to bloggers like Jill Richardson for her work writing about food policy and Dave Dayen’s for his work on the foreclosure crisis.

The Position

FDL Writer’s Foundation is searching for an energetic and entrepreneurially minded leader to serve as its first Executive Director. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for progressive ideas and a strong understanding of FDL’s community to build and manage this fledgling organization. The Executive Director will be both strategist and implementer, setting long-term goals for the organization and managing the execution of its programs. A natural relationship-builder, this individual will be responsible for fundraising the organization’s annual budget and identifying creative partnership opportunities. Specific responsibilities are outlined below.

Job Duties

• As a senior member of the UC federal relations team, serves as one of the University's key senior advocates,

strategists and spokespersons in Washington on federal science and technology related issues.

The successful candidate will focus on internal leadership development, key external partnership management, and internal collaborations to enhance communications, public policy, international, and online efforts underway at PPFA. The Director will develop, implement, and evaluate programs and best practices to forward impact for African Americans as leaders of the reproductive health and rights movement, as clients/service users, as community activists and advocates. In addition, this individual will serve as an information resource for and partner to PPFA’s president and senior staff to forward African American outreach. The Director will also foster ongoing working relationships with appropriate community organizations and leaders to position PPFA and its President as a “go to” source for African American reproductive health issues and advocacy in order to promote the Planned Parenthood brand.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Create repository and map of internal Planned Parenthood assets (i.e. affiliate African American health and education outreach, public policy, youth initiatives, and leadership) and external players (i.e. reproductive justice organizations, African American civic and social justice orgs) to assess capacity, gaps, opportunities and needs; communicate as needed about Planned Parenthood assets to various stakeholders
• Lead leadership development of African American leaders within the Planned Parenthood network including youth (peer educators/Vox), staff and board.
• Establish advisory council composed of Planned Parenthood African American leadership within affiliate senior staff and boards.
• Engage affiliate staff in regional trainings on connecting and expanding health education to policy, advocacy and communications.
• Facilitate dedicated training and convening opportunities for African American peer educators and Vox chapter members/leaders within existing leadership development efforts.
• Work with Public Policy to advance policies that address pressing issues in the African American community.
o Identify priority policy campaign (i.e. adolescent health and STD prevention and treatment, comprehensive sex ed, birth control coverage) for advocacy efforts of internal stakeholders noted above.
o Identify and manage strategic partners for policy efforts.
o Develop and maintain relationships with the staff of partner organizations to garner partnerships and support for our policy and organizing agendas.
o Assist affiliates in developing programs to broaden base of support in African American communities.
o Develop best practices and toolkits to assist affiliates in organizing efforts.
o Determine capacity to integrate Action Fund activities around 2010 elections into African American strategy.
• Engage in some strategic communications through existing infrastructure. Working collaboratively with Communications and Online departments, provide some strategic direction on media outreach, new media, online properties, etc. to include outreach to African American communities.
• Convene internal and external stakeholders to reflect on activities to date, explore best practices and opportunities in policy, communications and leadership development and build momentum for future mobilizations.
• Work with other PPFA staff in the creation of branded materials to better resonate with the African American community; ensure that the process and materials define who we are, what people can expect, highlights value of Planned Parenthood as health care provider and educator.
• Participates with President, senior staff, and Development to raise funds for ongoing support and expanded outreach initiatives.
• Monitors budget and work; establish measurable benchmarks and outcomes.
• Designs and delivers annual workshops and/or for national and affiliate staffs to share best practices and promote PPFA as a learning organization for African American community outreach and leadership development.
• Travels as needed to accomplish the work.
• Completes special projects as needed.

FIELD DIRECTOR

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) seeks an experienced Field Director to help drive national organizing and political campaigns at the state and national level, in partnership with our affiliates and with a strategic focus on grassroots base building in targeted communities. The successful candidate will lead field work to strengthen and build the movement in support of women’s health services nationally and at state and local levels. S/he will identify and organize a new generation of members and supporters, educating them about the politics of women’s health care, and building a powerful organization that will support the goals of PPFA to ensure that all women have access to the health services they require.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage 4-6 Regional Field Managers across the country
• Develop close relationships with 86 affiliates around the country to deeply understand their work, needs, and challenges and be able to develop joint work plans to accomplish issue, electoral, and base building goals in states and nationally
• In partnership with the National Political and Organizing Director, develop and implement a vision for running national issue campaigns that builds the grassroots base of PP, builds the organizing skills of affiliates, and moves a strategy to win at the state and national level.
• Develop and implement electoral campaign plans to build the grassroots power of PP in targeted areas, visibly provide the margin of victory in key races, and build the electoral skills of affiliates
• Work closely with affiliates to support them in their state legislative fights in a variety of state specific ways
• Think creatively about how to best leverage and harness Planned Parenthood’s incredible strength as a provider, seeing over 3 million patients through its network of 825 health centers in every state in the country, to build a strong grassroots base to support, defend, and expand women’s access to health care through issue and electoral campaigns
• Work with affiliates and national staff to develop effective PP models of organizing and work to spread them across the federation

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 5 years of directly related, progressively responsible program management experience

• Experience managing a team
• Comfortable managing up, down and across the organization (internal organizing)
• Experience running grassroots issue campaigns necessary; experience running political campaigns a plus.
• Team player with strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to communicate with colleagues who are unfamiliar with outreach/organizing programs.
• Self-starter with a high level of creative initiative but also accountability. Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, often in a fast-paced environment. Able to work alone effectively.
• Ability to identify, analyze, and solve a wide range of PPFA and federation issues and problems, involving all segments of the organization and the public.

• Passionate about the mission of Planned Parenthood and the role of outreach. Experience in a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization (a plus).
• Results-oriented leader with diplomacy skills.
• Sense of humor.
The long-term goals for the Political and Organizing Department include sustaining an ongoing organizing campaign and building a nationwide field organization that will:
• Advance the political and policy goals of PPFA and the reproductive health and rights movement, both offensive and defensive;
• Design and execute organizing campaigns and leadership efforts that build support
among and engage the next generation of activists;
• Integrate grassroots and grasstops leaders in campaigns to advance state and federal
policy goals;
• Work with Planned Parenthood affiliate staff and volunteers to deepen their organizing
skills and political engagement;
• Identify and plan for long term electoral and issue priorities, while also being responsive to immediate opportunities and challenges;

• Develop programs and campaigns that can be used with the funding community,
including major donors and foundations; and,
• Grow the PPAF and PPFPAC political program both nationally and in the states.

NLIHC seeks applicants for a housing policy analyst position. The analyst tracks, analyzes and advocates on federal legislative issues related to NLIHC’s mission. Duties include educating Congressional offices on low income housing policy issues; staffing and coordinating working groups convened by NLIHC; and informing members and partners of opportunities to influence policy decisions. There is limited on-street parking. The Church is directly across from DC City Hall/One Judicary Square. Use the Red Line Metro to Judicary Square Station and Exit for 4th & E Streets.
